She looks incredible, totally beautiful in the cover’s picture.

Winona Ryder is over it.

Five and a half years after being videotaped prying security sensors off items and shoving them into a bag at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills, Ryder, 35, is Vogue’s August cover model, representing women of her generation for the magazine’s annual age issue. It arrives on newsstands Wednesday.

The issue also reintroduces readers to Ryder, who, more than four years after conviction and sentencing (fine, probation and community service), has three small movie comedies coming: The Ten (in limited release Aug. 3), Sex and Death 101 (from the guy who wrote Heathers) and The Last Word with Ray Romano.

“The attention was what was embarrassing,” she tells Vogue. “It was the December after Sept. 11. … So much attention was being paid to me, when we had just been attacked, and there was all this really important news going on.”

She describes what was happening before the arrest. “Two months prior to that, I broke my arm in two places, and the doctor … was giving me a lot of stuff (Oxycodone, not to be confused with OxyContin), and I was taking it at first to get through the pain. And then there was this weird point when you don’t know if you are in pain but you’re taking it.” She continues: “Have you ever taken painkillers? It isn’t a reckless (state), like you’re out of your head. It’s just confusion.”

Her family supported her. “No one (in my family) ever got angry with me. Concerned, yes, but not concerned with a drug problem or anything. Because after that night I pretty much didn’t ever. … If you are ever arrested, you can’t ever do that again,” she says.

“I didn’t have this tremendous sense of guilt,” she adds, “because I hadn’t hurt anyone. … Had I physically harmed someone or caused harm to a human being, I think it would have been an entirely different experience.”

When it was over, she moved to San Francisco, where she has a house near her parents. At the time, she made “a very conscious decision not to work.”

Ryder is single but wants to have children. “It’s this weird pressure that I probably shouldn’t even talk about.” But the actress, who in the past was linked to Johnny Depp, Matt Damon and Dave Pirner of Pearl Jam, does. “You know how people ask, ‘Who is the love of your life?’ God, I hope I haven’t met that person yet, in a way, because I’m single. I hope I haven’t had that, since that would be sad.”
